When it mattered most, the Fort Zumwalt West basketball team finally got the upperhand versus Timberland.
The Jaguars knocked off the Wolves 61-55 in the championship game of the Class 5, District 2 Tournament Friday.
The two squads had met three times in the regular season, with Timberland winning all three games.
And much like all three meetings, the outcome was decided.
The Wolves (16-10) closed within 54-53 with three minutes remaining in regulation, but Zumwalt West scored seven of the game’s final nine points.
Timberland led 30-29 at halftime and trailed 44-43 heading into the fourth quarter.
Grady Daniels and Shyamal Patel each had a team-high 16 points for the Wolves. Josh Estrel added nine points.
Timberland opened the postseason with a 62-48 win over Francis Howell Central Feb. 28.
The Wolves led by two at halftime and extended their lead with a 15-9 run in the third quarter.
Daniels scored a team-best 19 points, while Estrel added 15.
Battle tops Holt in districts
Holt’s season came to a close in its first game of the postseason.
The Indians fell 69-54 to Battle in the Class XX, District XX Tournament held in Jefferson City. They ended the year with a 9-17 record.
Anthony Jones had a team-high 18 points, while Keishawn Forrest added 12. Trevon Jefferson pulled down 10 rebounds in the loss.
