The Caroline Close Stuart Chapter, NSDAR discovered many local schools did not have enough books for their number of grade school students on the Constitution. Chapter member, Lynda Gorline, obtained a grant from Thrivent Financial to purchase and donate books to the Wentzville area schools.
The National Society, Daughters of the American Revolution petitioned Congress in 1955 to set aside Sept. 17 to 23 annually to be dedicated to observe Constitution Week. National’s resolution was adopted by the U.S. Congress and signed into law by President Dwight D. Eisenhower on Aug. 2, 1956.
The goal of the celebration is to emphasize citizens’ responsibilities for protecting and defending the Constitution; to inform people the Constitution is the basis for America’s great heritage and the foundation for our way of life. It is also to encourage the study of the historical events which led to the framing of the Constitution in September 1787.
This book donation will help growing area schools have books on the Constitution available to more students.
“We saw a need to insure our local schools have these resources to teach their students about the Constitution “ stated Gorline “The Constitution is the foundation of our country. It is vital the next generation know and understand it. We are pleased to be able to help meet this need with the help of Thrivent.”
