This week, the globe’s attention was drawn to Barcelona, the host city for the Mobile World Congress, where a battalion of curiosities and novelties were unfurled. The main stars of the show were, unsurprisingly, smartphones.

Unusual Offering from a Chinese Manufacturer

One of the curiosities at MWC 2025 was courtesy of a Chinese manufacturer, Realme, who introduced an intriguing smartphone, the Realme 14 Pro+. This device, beyond its technical specifications, distinguishes itself from other market offerings with its unique color-changing casing that reacts to temperature changes.

Realme 14 Pro+: A Smartphone that Changes Color

As CNET underscores, this Realme-branded phone has been on the market since late last year. Nevertheless, the Asian firm seized the opportunity to showcase it to a wider audience at the Mobile World Congress.

On the surface, the Realme 14 Pro+ seems to offer standard features. It boasts a:

  • 6.83-inch display with a resolution of 2,800 x 1,272 pixels
  • Third-generation Qualcomm Snapdragon 7s processor
  • RAM options of 8GB and 12GB
  • Storage options of 128GB, 256GB, and 512GB
  • Triple camera system on the rear
  • Hefty 6,000mAh battery
  • However, the phone’s unique selling point is its chameleon-like ability. When exposed to cold (below 16 degrees Celsius), the thermochromic pigments in its casing react and change from a cream hue to a more intense blue. This technology is reminiscent of a pigment recently developed by researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) for creating art that changes in response to stimuli.

    Water Resistance and Color Magic

The Realme 14 Pro+, in addition, is water-resistant, as demonstrated in the promotional video. This is a logical feature, as it allows the phone to showcase its color-changing ability. The manufacturer explains this “magic”: “During use, cold-sensitive fusion fibres allow a color-changing effect, creating a dreamy blue texture contrasted with white and gold at temperatures below 16 degrees.”

Without a doubt, the Realme 14 Pro+ is one of the intriguing highlights from the recent edition of the Mobile World Congress.
