Diana Janikow

Timberland senior Diana Janikow has received a Gold Key award and an American Vision nomination for her painting called “Heritage Lost” in the 2019 Scholastic Art Competition. Art students from across the state submitted 1,600 pieces for the Regional Competition and the top 124 received Gold Key awards. Gold Key winners’ artwork will be showcased during a regional exhibit at the Kansas City Art Institute Crossroads Gallery: Center for Contemporary Practice March 19-24, and the artists will be honored at an awards ceremony at the gallery on March 23. The Missouri Gold Key-winning pieces will be submitted to the National Scholastic office in New York to be judged with all the other Gold Key work by artists from regions across the country.

In addition, Janikow’s work was one of five pieces selected as “Best-of-Show” artworks out of the regional Gold Key winners and will be submitted as nominees for American Visions medals adjudication at the national level.

Since 1923, the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards have recognized the vision, ingenuity, and talent of our nation’s youth, and provided opportunities for creative teens to be celebrated.  The National Scholastic Art Show is the most recognized and prestigious high school art exhibition in the nation. Past winners at the national level include Andy Warhol, Sylvia Plath, Truman Capote, Richard Avedon, Robert Redford, and Joyce Carol Oates.

Janikow, who is from Ukraine, shared that her “Heritage Lost” piece is a self-portrait that depicts the moment she realizes she no longer remembers how to speak Russian. It has also been selected for the St. Louis Artists’ Guild 2019 Emerson Young Artists’ Showcase, which runs March 7-30. Additionally, Janikow received the Award of Excellence (Best of Show) for “Heritage Lost” at the 22nd annual St. Louis Community College Florissant Valley High School Art Exhibition.
