Rafay Cheema, a fifth-grade student at Discovery Ridge Elementary in the Wentzville School District, earned 5th place overall at the Missouri Council of Teachers of Mathematics (MCTM) State Math Competition held at Columbia College on May 5th. The competition drew nearly 200 fourth, fifth and sixth graders from 75 schools across the state. Rafay is one of only twelve Missouri fifth graders who qualified to compete next at the mathleague.org National Elementary Championship held at Texas A&M University on June 16th.

Rafay earned 5th place in Target Round which has eight problems that students have 24 minutes to complete. Other categories at the competition include Sprint Round, a 40-minute multiple choice test consisting of 30 questions and Number Sense, a 10-minute test consisting of 80 problems that are designed to be solved mentally. Students qualify for the state competition after placing in the top ten in their grade at a regional competition. Prior to the regional competition, students must first master an in-school qualifying round.

The Missouri Council of Teachers of Mathematics is a non-profit organization with over 1,000 members dedicated to supporting and improving mathematics teaching and learning at all levels.
