For the twelfth year in a row, local service organizations are proud to participate again in Wreaths Across America Day by placing remembrance wreaths on the graves of the fallen during the year-end holiday season at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery on Saturday, December 16, 2017. The event is free and open to the public.

Wreaths Across America is a nonprofit organization that recognizes U.S. military veterans who have guarded and preserved America’s freedom. By placing remembrance wreaths on the graves of military veterans during the holiday season, WAA seeks to remember, honor and teach others about the courage and sacrifices of the men and women who have served in the armed forces.

Last year, wreaths were placed on over 1.2 million veterans’ graves at more than 1,100 cemetery or memorial sites in all 50 states.

Wreaths Across America culminates on December 16 with more than one hundred thousand wreaths placed on gravesites at Arlington National Cemetery and numerous ceremonies held at many of Arlington’s memorials, including the Tomb of the Unknowns. Simultaneous ceremonies will be held throughout the day at veterans’ cemeteries and memorials nationwide and abroad, including many in Missouri.

Volunteers from the following organizations helped place more than 2,500 wreaths throughout Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery during last year’s event: Missouri Wing Civil Air Patrol, Patriot Guard Riders, Gold Star Mothers, Blue Star Mothers, Sons of the American Revolution, Society of Mayflower Descendants, Survivor Outreach Services, Honor Flight, girl and boy scouts, and students from local schools.

“We are forever grateful for the thousands of supporters who dedicate their time and effort to fulfilling our mission on a local level,” said WAA Executive Director, Karen Worcester. “They know the value of remembering the fallen, honoring those who currently serve and teaching the next generation about the sacrifices made for our freedom every day, and without their continued support, Wreaths Across America would not exist.”
